Pastor Livingston shares life and ministry with his wife Frances Berena Livingston, who is the director of
our church’s Kwanzaa Camp. She is a Social Work Counselor and serves as school counselor at the
Thomas Edison Charter School. They have three children: Lauren Shaye Livingston, Rachel Berena
Livingston and Michael Jelani Livingston.
Pastor Livingston’s life in the church and his faith in the Lord
have sustained him all throughout his life. He knows what it
means to “come this far by faith.” He grew up in the home of a
single mother, and never met his father. Pastor Livingston is
often heard to say, “God can make a way out of no way. He
(God) has said to me, ‘your earthly father may not have been
there, but your heavenly father was there every step of the
way.’”

Our pastor is the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Michael Livingston, DMin. He has
served the Mother Church family for 10 years as our senior pastor. He
has been in ministry for 25 years, and served churches in Washington, D.
C, Maryland, and in Wilmington, DE before coming to be our pastor in
1998. We are pleased to have him as our spiritual leader; and the Mother
Church has grown considerably in the last ten years.
During that time our church started an African American history
museum/gallery in the church building, added a number of programs, such
as our Elders Ministry, Kwanzaa Summer Camp, Ujima After School
Program, Gathering of Men, and Harambee Rites of Passage Program for
Boys, to name a few. Under Pastor Livingston’s leadership we have
introduced a second worship service, and we are reaching out into the
community with the Word of God. Our church continues to grow with
several Bible studies, and ministry groups.
He has studied The Word of God with noted scholars, theologians
and pastors such as Rev. Dr. Cain Hope Felder, noted New
Testament Scholar and Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright, and Rev. Dr.
Josiah Young, a nationally known Liberation Theologian. He has
served along with Dr. Felder as a member of the Board of
Directors of the Biblical Institute for Social Change.
Pastor Livingston was born and grew up in Wilmington, DE. He
attended Howard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in
Journalism in 1980. After college, he worked as a reporter with United
Methodist News Service on Capital Hill in Washington, D.C for four
years.
Hearing the call from God, Pastor Livingston returned to Howard
University to earn a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree in 1986, and
he also earned the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in 1995. His doctoral
dissertation was Moving Towards Liberation Through History, Culture
and Tradition, geared towards the revitalization of the African
American Church.
