About The Mother Church
The Vision and Mission
The Mother African Union Church is a historic African
American congregation, with a progressive mission for
doing the Lord's ministry. Our church's stated vision is:
"God calls us to be a beacon of light to all, building
the Kingdom of God, as a loving family."
Our mission or purpose from God is:
- to teach, study and know God’s word:
- to actively pray for the whole community;
- to reach out using the gifts God has given us;
and,
- to remember and reclaim our African American
heritage.
It was said that Spencer, in starting this new church for African Americans, fired a shot for
religious freedom that was heard around the world. In the years following the start of this new
concept--a church for, by and with African Americans--several congregations separated from
white denominations and incorporated as independent religious bodies themselves.
In 1814, one year after the start of Spencer's Union Church of Africans, there were 31 churches
associated with the denomination and movement. In that year the church launched an annual
meeting in the City of Wilmington called "The Big Quarterly." It was always in August, and
therefore became known as the "August Quarterly." It continues to this day as an annual historic
African American festival celebrating religious freedom.
Our Present
God calls us to serve the present age, and like the original
church, although we are not exclusive, we serve God by
serving in the African American community. We preach and
teach God’s word, and we live out the justice and
righteousness of God in the ministry to which God calls our
congregation. Taking a note from a sister church in
Chicago, Ill. with a similar mission, we are "unashamedly
black and unapologetically Christian." In ministry to the
human soul and the human condition we have several
ministry programs.
We serve our immediate community with a number of
programs including the Spencer Heritage Hallway Museum,
the Ujima After School Program, Kwanzaa Summer Camp
for children grades K-5, Harambee Rites of Passage
Program for Boys, the Elders Ministry, and several Bible
Study and fellowship opportunities. We have many
programs and ministry that serve a variety of age levels,
men and women, and community concerns. We are a
historic church, but with conviction and the joy of the Lord,
we serve the present age. We are guided by Jesus' words:
God’s Spirit is on me; he’s chosen me to preach the
Message of good news to the poor, Sent me to
announce pardon to prisoners and recovery of sight to
the blind, To set the burdened and battered free, to
proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Our Past
The Mother Church was started in 1813 by Peter Spencer,
when he and 40 others felt they could not get justice and self
determination as part of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The
congregation was incorporated in September 1813 as the
Union Church of African Members. It was the first incorporated
church denomination in the nation, solely by, for and with
African Americans.
